Historical Background
Formerly the ancient village of Sanabad near Tus, the city expanded around the mausoleum of Imam al-Raza (A.S.) after his martyrdom in 203 AH (818 CE). Today, the Astan Quds Razavi complex encompasses over 1 million square meters, featuring iconic golden minarets, the Goharshad Mosque, historic water fountains (Esmaeel Talaei), and vast vaulted prayer halls.
